Cinque Terre

Manarola – Cinque Terre – Italia

Last November, we made a trip to Italy, more specifically to Cinque Terre in Liguria, on the west coast, and to Florence in Tuscany…the stay was short, 10 days, including 6 days in Cinque Terre…looking at the geography of the Cinque Terre region, we decided to settle in Manarola, located a few minutes by train from the other 4 villages…5 villages makeup Cinque Terre: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso…we decided on Manarola, mainly because being out of season and with rain in the forecast for this time of year, I wanted to give myself the best possible chance of photographing the marina of Manarola…my goal for this trip.

Accompanied by another couple, we lived in a small apartment with a view of the sea…it was always good exercise to get to the apartment, because we lived at the very top of the village and all the activity was down below…lots of hills and stairs…although the temperature was not the best, it didn’t slow us down…when we first got to Manarola, the sea was enraged…a phenomenon that only happens a few times a year…because we were out of season, the village was empty in the evening so we had no problem having tables in the restaurants of the village…during the day, it was a different story…tourists, mostly from cruise ships, arrived by train throughout the day to visit the 5 villages…and there were a lot of them.

A typical day started with a breakfast at Aristide, our favourite bistro…then we went back up the hill to get ready for the day…a short train ride to go visit a nearby village where we would have lunch…once the visit ended we returned to Manarola, our adoptive village…the most beautiful of the 5… 🙂 the only disappointment of the trip was the access to the walking trails… planning our trip, we thought we would be able to travel from one village to another using the trails…not so easy…most of the trails are rather difficult to navigate…and the easiest, the one that followed the coast was closed due to landslides, and it will not open soon…Monique and Paul hiked in the surrounding trails and they validated the difficulty of navigating the trails.

To sum up our stay in Cinque Terre, we really enjoyed our week in the region…the vistas are picturesque…and the people of the village of Manarola were very welcoming.

From Cinque Terre, we returned to Florence, in Tuscany, for a few days…the temperature was not the best, but it did not stop us…we had visited Florence a while ago, while on a cruise, but we didn’t get to see all the attractions…we had fun in Florence…the company was great.

Au mois de novembre, nous avons fait un voyage en Italie, plus spécifiquement les Cinque Terre en Ligurie sur la côte ouest et à Florence en Toscane…le séjour a été bref, soit 10 jours, dont 6 jours à Cinque Terre…vu la géographie de la région de Cinque Terre, nous avons décidé de nous établir à Manarola situé à quelques minutes, en train, des 4 autres villages…5 villages forment les Cinque Terre: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza et Monterosso…nous avions décidé sur Manarola, car en étant hors saison et avec de la pluie dans les prévisions pour ce temps de l’année, je voulais me donner le plus de chances possible de photographier la marina de Manarola…mon objectif pour ce voyage.

Accompagné d’un couple d’amis, nous habitions dans un petit appartement avec vue sur la mer…c’était toujours du bon exercice pour se rendre à l’appartement, car nous habitions en tout en haut du village et toute l’activité se trouvait en bas…beaucoup de côtes et d’escaliers…bien que la température n’était la meilleure, elle ne nous a pas ralentis…lorsque nous sommes arrivés à Manarola, la mer était enragée…un phénomène qui n’arrive que quelques fois par année…du fait que nous étions hors saison, le village était vide en soirée donc nous n’avions pas de problèmes à avoir des places dans les restaurants du village…durant la jour, c’était une autre paire de manches…les touristes, provenant en majorité de bateaux de croisières, arrivent en train tout au long de la journée pour visiter les 5 villages…et il y en a.

Une journée typique commençait avec un petit-déjeuner chez Aristide, notre bistro favori…puis on remontait la côte pour aller se préparer pour la journée…une petite randonnée de train pour aller visiter un village avoisinant où nous allions diné…une fois la visite terminée nous revenions à Manarola, notre village adoptif…le plus beau des 5 🙂 …la seule déception du voyage fut l’accès aux sentiers piétons…en planifiant notre voyage, on pensait bien pouvoir se déplacer d’un village à l’autre en utilisant les sentiers…pas si facile…la plupart des sentiers sont plutôt difficile à naviguer…et le plus facile, celui qui suivait la côte était fermé à cause d’éboulement de terrain, et n’ouvrira pas de sitôt…Monique et Paul ont fait une randonnée dans les sentiers avoisinants et ils ont validé la difficulté de naviguer les sentiers.

Pour résumer notre séjour à Cinque Terre, nous avons beaucoup aimé notre semaine dans la région…les prises de vues sont pittoresques…et les gens du village de Manarola était très accueillants.

De Cinque Terre, nous sommes retournés à Florence en Toscane pour y demeurer pour quelques jours…la température n’était pas au rendez-vous, mais elle ne nous as pas arrêtés…nous avions déjà visité Florence lors d’une croisière, mais nous n’avions pas eu la chance de voir toutes les attractions…nous nous sommes bien amusés à Florence…la compagnie était superbe.
