Day 13…Frobisher Bay & Lower Savage Islands…Jour 13

When you embark on an expedition like ours, on a Lindblad National Geographic ship, you think you know when you will embark and disembark, but you know for sure that what happens in between can be pretty unpredictable…weather, wildlife and things like a ship stealing your berth can throw a wrench in a perfectly planned schedule…that is what happened today…

The plan when we arrived in York Sound in Frobisher Bay was to allow members of the expedition to kayak in the bay, because if somewhere is going to be protected from the wind, a bay is a pretty good place…what the expedition leader doesn’t want are runaway kayaks 🙂 …a land trek was also in the plans…when we arrived in the sound, Lindblad staff went to scout the area and it all looked good until a polar bear was spotted swimming towards the ship…that was it for the kayaks…the last thing you want to do if you’re the expedition leader is to serve human canapés to a hungry polar bear 🙂 …so instead, we observed this polar bear for a good 20-30 minutes…the leader said that it was probably the most curious bear that they had seen approaching a ship…the bear swam around the bow continuously looking at us, smelling the bacon from the kitchen and most likely seeing the ship as a big bowl of hors d’oeuvres 🙂 …after a while, when the bear realized that nobody was jumping in the water to play with it, the bear swam back to shore and we made our way to our next destination, the Lower Savage Islands…

By the time we got to the Lower Savage Islands, the weather was miserable, fog, rain and cold air had set in…but, you should never let pass an opportunity to take a zodiac cruise in an area known for its potential for polar bear sightings…dressed up in rain gear and with some rain protection for the camera, I jumped in the zodiac ready for anything or nothing at all…it didn’t take long…a polar bear was spotted on one of the rock cliffs…we were able to get very close to the bear without risking it attacking us…this bear was also very curious, coming closer to the edge of the rocks as he kept smelling the air…again, the food standing up in the kayak looked appealing, but it would be a lot of work to get to it 🙂 …this was as close as you want to be to a polar bear…as we were leaving the area, the outboard motor on the zodiac developed a problem…we were towed for a little bit and then we eventually transferred to another zodiac to make our way to the ship…the zodiac had started the cruise on one side of the channel and the ship moved to the other side of the channel to pick us up…well, by the time we got to the other side of the channel, the fog was so thick that we couldn’t find the ship…the zodiac is equipped with a tracker…so we were going to be found eventually 🙂 …we all had a good laugh…without a doubt, one of the best zodiac cruise I have ever been on…tonight we leave Nunavut and head for Labrador.

Lorsque vous embarquez sur une expédition comme la nôtre, sur un navire Lindblad National Geographic, vous pensez savoir quand vous allez embarquer et débarquer, mais vous savez avec certitude que ce qui se passe entre les deux peut être assez imprévisible…la météo, la faune et des choses comme un navire qui vole votre poste d’amarrage peuvent venir brouiller les cartes d’un horaire parfaitement planifié…c’est ce qui s’est passé aujourd’hui…

Le plan lorsque nous sommes arrivés dans la baie de York, à l’intérieur de la baie de Frobisher, était de permettre aux membres de l’expédition de faire du kayak dans la baie, car s’il y a un endroit qui peut être protégé du vent, une baie est un assez bon endroit…ce que le chef de l’expédition ne veut surtout pas, ce sont des kayaks en fuite 🙂 …une randonnée pédestre était aussi dans les cartons…quand nous sommes arrivés dans la baie, le personnel de Lindblad est allé explorer la région et tout avait l’air bien jusqu’à ce qu’un ours polaire soit aperçu en train de nager vers le navire…s’en était fini pour les kayaks…la dernière chose que vous voulez faire si vous êtes le chef d’expédition est de servir des canapés humains à un ours polaire affamé 🙂 …alors au lieu de cela, nous avons observé cet ours polaire pendant 20 à 30 minutes…le chef a dit que c’est probablement l’ours le plus curieux qu’ils aient vu s’approcher du navire…l’ours a nagé autour de la proue en nous regardant continuellement, sentant le bacon de la cuisine et voyant très probablement le navire comme un gros plat de hors-d’œuvres 🙂 …après un certain temps, lorsque l’ours s’est rendu compte que personne ne sautait à l’eau pour jouer avec lui, l’ours est retourné à la rive et nous nous sommes rendus à notre prochaine destination, les îles Lower Savage…

Au moment où nous sommes arrivés aux îles Lower Savage, le temps était misérable, le brouillard, la pluie et l’air froid s’étaient installés…mais, vous ne devriez jamais laisser passer une occasion de faire une excursion dans un zodiaque dans une région connue pour son potentiel d’observation d’ours polaires…vêtu de vêtements de pluie et avec une certaine protection contre la pluie pour la caméra, j’ai sauté dans le zodiaque prêt à tout ou rien du tout…cela n’a pas pris longtemps…un ours polaire a été repéré sur l’une des falaises rocheuses…nous avons pu nous approcher très près de l’ours sans risquer de nous faire attaquer…cet ours était aussi très curieux, se rapprochant du bord des rochers et il ne cessait de sentir l’air…encore une fois, la nourriture, debout dans le kayak, avait l’air attrayante, mais il aurait beaucoup de travail à faire pourse mettre à table 🙂 …c’était le plus près que tu veux être avec un ours polaire…alors que nous quittions la zone d’observation, le moteur hors-bord du zodiaque a développé un problème…nous avons été remorqués pendant un certain temps, puis nous avons transférés dans un autre zodiaque pour retourner au navire…le zodiaque avait commencé l’excursion d’un côté du chenal et le navire s’est déplacé de l’autre côté du chenal pour venir nous chercher…eh bien, au moment où nous nous sommes rendus de l’autre côté du chenal, le brouillard était si lourd que nous ne pouvions pas trouver le navire…le zodiaque est équipé d’un localisateur…donc nous allions être trouvés éventuellement 🙂 …nous avons bien rit…sans aucun doute, l’une des meilleures excursions de zodiaque que j’aie jamais faite…ce soir nous quittons le Nunavut et nous nous dirigeons vers le Labrador.
