Day 20 – Hercules Bay & Stromness – Jour 20

So the captain decided to stick it out an extra day in South Georgia as he saw the conditions improving for the crossing to the Falklands…but he was pretty clear in his briefing, it will not be comfortable as we will be hitting the waves head on, we will have some major rolling with seas up to 5 1/2 metres all day Saturday and part of the night Sunday, only to get better Sunday.…

This morning, we stopped at Hercules Bay for a Zodiac cruise to see the Macaroni penguins…as they hang out in cliffs, a Zodiac cruise is the better way to see them…Hercules Bay is a beautiful bay…we did see the Macaronis and we experienced another session of the cycle of life with giant petrels feeding on penguins…it was quite a morning…

In the afternoon, we went for another history session…this time we stopped at Stromness…Stromness is the deserted location of an old whaling station…from the beach, we made our way to the falls…at the top of the falls is where Sir Ernest Shackleton heard the bells of the whaling station at Stromness, and he knew then that he had reached a human settlement and he would be able to save his men after 1 year and 1/2 of being shipwrecked…at the beach, there were a lot of terror fur balls around the zodiac…we had to stay 600 feet from the whaling station as it is no condition to have visitors walk around it…

Le capitaine a donc décidé de passer une journée supplémentaire en Géorgie du Sud, car il a vu les conditions s’améliorer pour la traversée vers les Malouines.…mais il a été assez clair dans son briefing, ce ne sera pas confortable, car nous frapperons les vagues de front, nous aurons des roulements majeurs avec des mers jusqu’à 5 1/2 mètre toute la journée samedi et une partie de la nuit dimanche, seulement pour s’améliorer dimanche…

Ce matin, nous nous sommes arrêtés à Hercules Bay pour une croisière en zodiaque pour voir les pingouins Macaroni… comme ils hébergent sur les falaises, un croisière en zodiaque est la meilleure façon de les voir…Hercules Bay est une baie panoramique…nous avons vu les Macaronis et nous avons vécu une autre session du cycle de la vie avec des pétrels géants se nourrissant de pingouins… c’était toute une matinée…

Dans l’après-midi, nous sommes allés pour une autre session d’histoire… cette fois, nous nous sommes arrêtés à Stromness… Stromness est l’endroit d’une ancienne station baleinière désertée… de la plage, nous nous sommes rendus aux chutes…au sommet des chutes, c’est là que Sir Ernest Shackleton a entendu les cloches de la station baleinière de Stromness, et il savait alors qu’il avait atteint une colonie humaine et il serait en mesure de sauver ses hommes après 1 an et demi de naufrage… à la plage, il y avait beaucoup de boules de fourrure de terreur autour du zodiaque…nous avons dû rester à 600 pieds de la station baleinière, car il n’est pas en condition pour que les visiteurs s’y promènent…
