Day 12…Monumental Island – Jour 12…Île Monumentale

It was a pretty long distance to navigate from Sunneshine Fjord to Monumental Island where we spent our afternoon looking for wildlife…at first, when looking at the island, there didn’t seem to be a lot happening…so, we got in the zodiacs for our afternoon cruise around the island…as we came around to the back of the island, there they were, 4 walruses…we stayed about 60 metres away from them, close enough to take some decent shots, but far enough not stress them…they had spent part of the afternoon in that area, being gawked at by tourists…then they decided that they had had enough attention and swam away, still hugging the rocks…an interesting factoid is that the divers on the ship do not dive when walruses are in the water…the walrus is known for its sucking power and apparently can be very dangerous if they attach to your face…in the evening we were awakened around midnight by a message informing us that we could see northern lights…so, a lot of folks went outside to view the Northern lights…I took a few shots, but it is probably as good as you could get with a handheld camera, at night on a moving ship.

C’était une assez longue distance pour naviguer du fjord Sunneshine à Monumental Island où nous avons passé notre après-midi à chercher de la faune… au début, en regardant l’île, il ne semblait pas se passer grand-chose…alors, nous sommes embarqués dans les zodiaques pour notre croisière de l’après-midi autour de l’île…lorsque nous sommes arrivés à l’arrière de l’île, ils étaient là, 4 morses…nous sommes restés à environ 60 mètres d’eux, assez près pour prendre des photos décentes, mais assez loin pour ne pas les stresser…ils avaient passé une partie de l’après-midi à cet endroit, se faisant observer par les touristes…puis ils ont décidé qu’ils avaient eu assez d’attention et se sont éloignés, embrassant toujours les rochers…un fait intéressant est que les plongeurs du navire ne plongent pas quand les morses sont dans l’eau…le morse est reconnu pour son pouvoir succion et peut apparemment être très dangereux s’il s’attache à votre visage…le soir, nous avons été réveillés vers minuit par un message nous informant que nous pouvions voir des aurores boréales…donc, beaucoup de gens sont allés à l’extérieur pour voir les aurores boréales…j’ai pris quelques photos, mais c’est probablement le mieux que je pouvais faire avec une caméra dans mes mains, la nuit sur un navire en mouvement.
