Day 22 Part II – Cape St. Mary’s – Jour 22 Partie II

We left Bay Bulls around 11 AM, after filling up a card of puffin pictures…the goal was to get to the Cape St. Mary’s Ecological Reserve early enough in the afternoon to increase our chances of seeing the Northern Gannets…with the fog being a potential obstacle, if I couldn’t take shots of the gannets this afternoon, I could always come back tomorrow for a second try…and if I did get my shots in the afternoon, I wouldn’t have to worry about not being able to shoot them tomorrow morning…

When we arrived at the site, it was really foggy…you couldn’t even see the lighthouse that was not more than 300 metres away from the parking lot…I resolved myself to the fact that I wouldn’t see them this afternoon…well, the fog cleared up just as we were making our way to the lookout…they say there are about 30,000 nesting pairs of Northern Gannets on the rock…to me, it looked like it’s a lowball number…they were all over the place…so, shooting them wasn’t the problem…picking the ones you wanted to photograph was the issue…one of the park attendants was saying that they lost a lot of birds due to avian flu…after the shooting session, we headed back to St. Bride’s where we stayed at a beautiful inn, The Capeway Inn & Suites…we really enjoyed our time in the area.

Nous avons quitté Bay Bulls vers 11 heures, après avoir rempli une carte digitale de photos de macareux…l’objectif était de se rendre à la réserve écologique de Cape St. Mary’s assez tôt dans l’après-midi pour augmenter nos chances de voir les fous de Bassan…le brouillard étant un obstacle potentiel, si je ne pouvais pas prendre de photos des fous de Bassan cet après-midi, je pourrais toujours revenir demain pour un deuxième essai…et si je prenais mes photos dans l’après-midi, je n’aurais pas à m’inquiéter de ne pas pouvoir les prendre demain matin…

Quand nous sommes arrivés sur le site, il y avait vraiment du brouillard…on ne pouvait même pas voir le phare qui est à moins de 300 mètres du stationnement…j’étais résolu au fait que je ne les verrais pas cet après-midi…eh bien, le brouillard s’est éclairci juste au moment où nous nous rendions au belvédère…ils disent qu’il y a environ 30 000 paires de nidifications de fous de Bassan sur le rocher…d’après moi ce chiffre est sous-estimé…ils étaient partout…les photographier n’était pas le problème…choisir lesquels photographier c’était le défi…l’un des préposés au parc disait qu’ils avaient perdu beaucoup d’oiseaux à cause de la grippe aviaire…après la séance de photographie, nous sommes retournés à St. Bride’s où nous avons séjourné dans une belle auberge, The Capeway Inn & Suites…nous avons vraiment apprécié notre séjour dans la région.
