Battle Harbour used to be an important fishing station on the southeastern Labrador coast…it was an economic centre for more than 200 years…then, a downturn in the cod fishery compounded with a major fire was responsible for its economic decline…the permanent settlement was abandoned in the 1960s and it is now a summer fishing station…residents still have private residences which they use in the summer…the Battle Harbour Historic Trust has taken over the site and has taken on the project of restoring the site…the site is now operating as a museum…
We spent the whole day in Battle Harbour…a first visit in the morning to listen to the guide tell us about the history of the site…we then returned in the afternoon for more exploration…some folks followed the naturalists, others followed the Lindblad photo lead…I decided to go exploring on my own…I enjoyed my time, but by pure luck of the draw, as in being at the right place at the right time, I missed an impressive humpback whale feeding session…while I did see the whales, it was at a different location and further away…having said that, I really enjoyed the afternoon, being all by myself, exploring and finding interesting subjects…the island is also the site where the first Marconi Communication station was built…the towers are still on the site…talk about history…the first wireless site and I had no wireless cell reception… 🙂 …near the Marconi towers, there is a memorial site remembering 3 persons who died in a plane crash on the island in 1976…some of the wreckage is still on the site…I had an opportunity to photograph the resident Arctic fox…he is wild, but he’s not shy…also had the opportunity to photograph some gannets…all in all, a beautiful day at Battle Harbour.
Battle Harbour était autrefois une importante station de pêche sur la côte sud-est du Labrador…c’était un centre économique pendant plus de 200 ans….un ralentissement de la pêche à la morue en plus d’un incendie majeur ont été responsable du déclin économique…la communauté permanente a été abandonnée dans les années 1960 et c’est maintenant une station de pêche d’été…les résidents ont encore des résidences privées qu’ils utilisent en été…le Battle Harbour Historic Trust a repris le site et a entrepris un projet de restauration du site…le site fonctionne maintenant comme un musée…
Nous avons passé toute la journée à Battle Harbour…une première visite le matin pour écouter le guide nous parler de l’histoire du site…nous sommes ensuite revenus dans l’après-midi pour plus d’exploration…certaines personnes ont suivi les naturalistes, d’autres ont suivi l’expert photo de Lindblad…j’ai décidé d’aller explorer par moi-même…j’ai apprécié mon temps, mais par pure malchance, n’étant pas au bon endroit au bon moment, j’ai raté une impressionnante séance d’alimentation des baleines à bosse….j’ai vu les baleines, mais à un endroit différent et plus loin…cela dit, j’ai vraiment apprécié l’après-midi par moi-même, à explorer et trouver des sujets intéressants…l’île est également le site où la première station de communication Marconi a été construite…les tours sont toujours sur le site…parlez-moi d’histoire…le premier site sans fil et je n’avais pas de réception cellulaire… 🙂 …près des tours Marconi, il y a un site commémoratif en souvenir de 3 personnes qui sont mortes dans un accident d’avion sur l’île, en 1976…une partie de l’épave est toujours sur place…nous avons pu photographier le renard arctique résident…il est sauvage, mais il n’est pas timide…j’ai également eu l’occasion de photographier des fous de Bassan…dans l’ensemble, une belle journée à Battle Harbour.
