OK, so today was puffin dayโฆwe missed the show yesterday, so we have to find them todayโฆafter a nice breakfast delivered to our loft, we drove to Elliston to see the puffinsโฆwe stopped at the first site we tried yesterday to see if what we had been told was trueโฆthere were still no puffinsโฆwe headed straight to Puffin Cityโฆand there, it was a whole different storyโฆwe had the best view on one of the best puffins shows you can imagineโฆpuffins were heading for their burrow with their mouths filled up with capelin, only to have to dodge a whole bunch of gulls that were too lazy to catch their own fishโฆit was amazing to watchโฆthem puffins are pretty braveโฆand if you compare their size to that of a seagull, they are the David to the Goliath gullsโฆafter 40 minutes of action, the puffins were all mostly at sea, not sure how long it would take for the show to repeat itself, so we headed towards Cape Bonavista to visit the lighthouseโฆthere is a little beach not far from the lookout…we stopped to take a look and witnessed the damage caused by the avian flu…I counted at least 8 dead marine birds in a 30-meter stretch of the beach…
The old Cape Bonavista lighthouse is now a museum having been replaced by an automatic lighthouse tower in the early 60sโฆthe museum reflects the life of the lighthouse keepersโฆit wasn’t easy workโฆfirst, you had to keep the candles lights fed with whale or seal oil, and then you had to crank a 200-pound counterweight every 2 hours to keep the reflectors turningโฆ15 minutes to crank for 2 hours of rotationโฆwe followed our Cape Bonavista visit with another walkabout, and another moose burger for dinnerโฆtomorrow we head back to St. John’sโฆone regret, not staying here longer.
Donc aujourd’hui c’รฉtait le jour des macareuxโฆnous avons ratรฉ le spectacle hier, et nous devons les trouver aujourd’huiโฆaprรจs un bon petit dรฉjeuner livrรฉ ร notre loft, nous sommes allรฉs ร Elliston pour voir les macareuxโฆnous nous sommes arrรชtรฉs au premier site que nous avions essayรฉ hier pour voir si ce qu’on nous avait dit รฉtait vraiโฆil n’y avait toujours pas de macareuxโฆnous sommes allรฉs directement ร Puffin Cityโฆet lร , c’รฉtait une tout autre histoireโฆnous avons eu la meilleure vue sur l’un des meilleurs spectacles de macareux que vous pouvez imaginerโฆles macareux se dirigeaient vers leur terrier avec leur bouche remplie de capelan, et devaient esquiver tout un tas de mouettes qui รฉtaient trop paresseuses pour attraper leur propre poissonโฆc’รฉtait incroyable ร regarderโฆles macareux sont assez courageuxโฆet si vous comparez leur taille ร celle d’une mouette, ils sont le David comparรฉ aux mouettes qui sont Goliathโฆaprรจs 40 minutes d’action, les macareux รฉtaient tous pour la plupart en mer, je ne savais pas combien de temps il faudrait pour que le spectacle se rรฉpรจte, alors nous nous sommes dirigรฉs vers le Cap Bonavista pour visiter le phareโฆil y a une petite plage non loin du belvรฉdรจre…nous nous sommes arrรชtรฉs pour jeter un coup d’ลil et avons รฉtรฉ tรฉmoins des dommages causรฉs par la grippe aviaire…j’ai comptรฉ au moins 8 oiseaux marins morts sur un tronรงon de 30 mรจtres de la plage…
L’ancien phare du Cap Bonavista est maintenant un musรฉe qui a รฉtรฉ remplacรฉ par une tour de phare automatique au dรฉbut des annรฉes 60โฆ le musรฉe reflรจte la vie des gardiens du phareโฆce n’รฉtait pas un travail facileโฆd’abord, vous deviez garder les lumiรจres des bougies alimentรฉes avec de l’huile de baleine ou de phoque, puis vous deviez maniveller un contrepoids de 200 livres toutes les 2 heures pour que les rรฉflecteurs tournentโฆ15 minutes de manivelle pour 2 heures de rotationโฆnous avons suivi notre visite du Cap Bonavista avec une autre promenade et un autre hamburger d’orignal pour le dรฎnerโฆdemain, nous retournons ร Saint-Jeanโฆun regret, ne pas rester ici plus longtemps.
