Nemuro sur mer – Day 9-10 – Nemuro by the Sea

Yesterday morning we left Kushiro and headed towards Nemuro where we are spending 2 nights…on the way to Nemuro, we passed through the Akkeshi-Kiritappu-Konbumori Quasi-National Park…you’re probably asking what a Quasi-National Park is…well, it’s like a National Park but it’s managed by the prefecture…somewhat like a provincial park in Canada versus a national park…it benefits from all the protection elements a national park would, but it has less funding…the park was established in 2021 and it’s the 6th quasi-national park on Hokkaido…it is home to one of the largest wetlands in the country.

Along the way we stopped at Cape Kiritappu…beyond the lighthouse attraction, it is known in the area to be a site where you might observe sea otters…not 100% guaranteed, but we stopped, and we were lucky…2 sea otters were relaxing in the water off the cliffs…from there we made our way to Nemuro…lake Furen at the western entrance of Nemuro is home to the Shunkunitai, an elevated boardwalk that goes around lake Furen wetlands…Lake Furen is really a small inlet in the Sea Okhotsk…its brackish water makes for interesting scenery…it also attracts seabirds and other wildlife…pretty much hit the jackpot there…first there was White-tailed eagle that landed on the rail of the boardwalk not too far from where I was standing…I got to spend about 7 to 8 minutes with it, as it ate its meal…further down the path, we spotted a Steller’s sea eagle in a tree…while the lighting wasn’t great, I was able to overexpose the shots and got some pretty good results…then the real show happened when the Steller’s eagle and the White-tailed eagle got into a fight over a fish…that was pretty awesome to watch…from the Shunkunitai, we headed over to Cape Hanasaki which is famous for its columnar rock formation…after a long day, we checked into our Japanese-style hotel room.

This morning we drove to Cape Ochiishi to board a small fishing vessel for a bird sighting cruise…the Pacific Ocean was pretty bumpy and the skies were grey, so the photography was challenging…the Sherpa felt that after the 2-1/2-hour bumpy boat ride that her hours for the day were done, so we dropped her off at the hotel and I headed back to the Shunkunitai hoping for a repeat of yesterday, but that would not be the case…tomorrow we to Lake Akan District and Yoroushi…volcanoes and Whooper swans…enjoy the slideshow.

Hier matin, nous avons quitté Kushiro et nous nous sommes dirigés vers Nemuro où nous passons 2 nuits…sur le chemin de Nemuro, nous sommes passés à travers le parc quasi national Akkeshi-Kiritappu-Konbumori…vous vous demandez probablement ce qu’est un parc quasi national…eh bien, c’est comme un parc national, mais il est géré par la préfecture…un peu comme un parc provincial au Canada par rapport à un parc national…il bénéficie de tous les éléments de protection qu’un parc national aurait, mais il a moins de financement…le parc a été créé en 2021 et c’est le 6e parc quasi national d’Hokkaido…il abrite l’une des plus grandes zones humides du pays.

En chemin, nous nous sommes arrêtés au cap Kiritappu…au-delà de l’attraction du phare, il est connu dans la région pour être un endroit où vous pourriez observer des loutres de mer…pas garanti à 100 %, mais nous nous sommes arrêtés, et nous avons eu de la chance…2 loutres de mer se détendaient dans l’eau au large des falaises…de là, nous nous sommes rendus à Nemuro…le lac Furen, à l’entrée ouest de Nemuro, abrite le Shunkunitai, une promenade surélevée qui fait le tour des zones humides du lac Furen…le lac Furen est vraiment un grau dans la mer de Okhotsk…ses eaux saumâtres ont crée des paysages intéressants…il attire également les oiseaux marins et d’autres animaux sauvages…j’ai frappé le jackpot…d’abord, il y avait un Pygargue à queue blanche qui a atterri sur le rampe de la promenade non trop loin de l’endroit où je me tenais…j’ai pu passer environ 7 à 8 minutes avec, alors qu’il mangeait son repas…plus loin sur le chemin, nous avons repéré un Pygargue de Steller dans un arbre…bien que la lumière n’était pas excellente, j’ai pu surexposer les photos et j’ai obtenu de très bons résultats…puis le vrai spectacle s’est produit lorsque le Pygargue de Steller et le Pygargue à queue blanche se sont battus pour un poisson…c’était assez génial à regarder… du Shunkunitai, nous nous sommes dirigés vers le cap Hanasaki, qui est célèbre pour sa formation rocheuse en colonne…après une longue journée, nous nous sommes enregistrés dans notre chambre d’hôtel de style japonais.

Ce matin, nous sommes allés au cap Ochiishi pour monter à bord d’un petit bateau de pêche pour une croisière d’observation des oiseaux…l’océan Pacifique était assez cahoteux et le ciel était gris, donc la photographie était difficile…le Sherpa a décidé qu’après la croisière en bateau de 2 heures et demie, ses heures pour la journée étaient terminées, alors nous l’avons déposée à l’hôtel et je suis retourné au Shunkunitai en espérant une répétition d’hier, mais ça n’a pas été le cas…demain, nous nous dirigeons vers le district du lac Akan et à Yoroushi…des volcans et des cygnes chanteurs…j’espère que vous apprécierez le diaporama.
